"I have taken lessons with Phil for nearly ten years. That's a boatload of patience on his part. More importantly, it's been huge
fun and I've already signed up for the next ten. So if the creek don't rise and the good Lord's willin..."

"I've taken lessons from Phil for several years and my daughter (age 11) started as his student last year. I'm in my mid 40s and have played guitar for 25 years, while my daughter is just starting out. Phil is a wonderful teacher for both of us, which is a testament to how patient and adaptable he is. One of the many things I appreciate about him is his selflessness--he never gets frustrated with his students, even when they are (God forbid) underprepared, and he never shows off, even though he is a superb player. I look forward to my lesson all week. In the words of my daughter, "Everyone should take lessons from Phil. He's an awesome teacher.""

"Phil has visited my school to work with my guitar class students as well as my jazz ensemble guitarists. I also hired him as a clinician for the 2012 NHBDA Jazz Clinic. He was professional in his correspondance and his presentation, and the students remained inspired by his musicianship and teaching long after his departure. I have known of Phil as an exceptional performer for many years and am thrilled that he also approaches teaching with equal dedication. I enthusiastically recommend Phil to anyone looking for an expert on improvisation or guitar. --Dave Umstead, Hollis-Brookline High School (NH) "

"Phil has been my guitar teacher for over five years. He is both a great guitarist and a great teacher. He strives to improve my technique, understanding of music theory and listening skill while making it fun. He also understands that a middle-aged student must balance practice time with other demands on his time. I strongly recommend Phil as a teacher. "

"Phil has been my son"
's instructor for the past 18 months and my son and I could not happier. My son has learned not only to play but how to enjoy all types of music. Phils' style of teaching has helped my son with his focus in many other areas, sports, school work, and dealing with personal issues. As the Father of one of Phil's students it was a great move on my part for my son."

"I started lessons with Phil after I had stopped playing for a year and I wanted to pick it back up. Phil is a really good teacher. After a few months I was able to play better than I did before. Phil does a really good job at making every lesson fun and incorporates the things that he is teaching into music that I like to play. He takes the time to get to know me and my interests. He also introduces music that I wouldn't have chosen and I end up understanding more about music from it. Phil is an amazing guitarist and teaches a variety of skills. He knows music theory and can listen to songs and write them out on paper making it easier to learn songs that I am interested in. I really enjoy learning music theory and I like that I can just decide one lesson that I want to lean a song and he will help me break it down and learn to play it. He takes the time to help me with any performances that I want to do and isn't afraid to keep it real. If you want to learn how to write your own music and play awesome solos and learn everything about guitar then Phil would be the perfect person to take lessons from."

"I started learning guitar with Phil when I first got my guitar three years ago. I cannot even start to explain how much I have learned from having Phil as my teacher. I am only in high school, but I have accomplished so much because of Phil, from getting numerous gigs, preparing for Jazz All State and even helping other kids with learning guitar, but I could of never of done any of this without Phil. I started playing guitar without knowing what to do, and even being a little scared, but Phil's outstanding teaching and knowledge of music and students, allowed me to accomplish everything I have. Phil's musical ability allows him to incorporate music knowledge and theory into any style of music a student of his is interested in. Having Phil as a teacher has been great for me because I enjoy so many styles of music. Phil has been able to teach me the musical styles of classical, jazz, rock and even metal. I would highly recommend Phil as a guitar teacher to anyone no matter what musical taste they have or what level of guitar they are at."

"Phil Sargent was my guitar instructor for five years. He has a vast knowledge of the jazz idiom as well as various other styles including odd-metered Bulgarian music and even metal, all of which he incorporates into his unique style. Phil is a great teacher for students of all abilities. I started lessons with him as an inexperienced player. Now I am going on to study music at the college level. He has a more modern approach to harmony, which makes him a great teacher for advanced players. During my lessons he was able to present information and guitar techniques in an accessible way. It is clear to me that he is not only a great teacher but also a great player. He is a guitarist that teaches, not a teacher that plays guitar. I would recommend Phil Sargent to any guitar student, especially students interested in jazz."
