I graduated from Penn State University Park in 2003 with a Biology Degree and my Penn State Karate Club Black Belt. Since then I obtained my Master's Degree in Biology from Villanova University, and have continued to diligently train the art of IsshinRyu Karate-Do. I was promoted to a full instructor status (3rd degree Black Belt) in March 2011. Our members strive to achieve mental and physical excellence with specific focus on basic techniques, self-defense, forms, sparring & weapons.

"I have been training with Sensei Heine (Derek) for over 5 years now. I was brand new to Isshinryu Karate when we began training together at Penn State. Over the years he has helped me earn my black belt and I have had the privilege of working with him as an instructor for the past year. He is a well versed and dynamic instructor who takes pride in the heritage of Isshinryu and what it stands for. "I began training with Sensei Heine (Derek) last Fall after graduating from Penn State and earning my Black Belt. Derek is a very motivated, knowledgeable, and extremely proficient practitioner of Isshinryu Karate. Even though I've only been training with him for a relatively short time, my Karate has vastly improved in both technique and in understanding what Isshinryu is all about. Phenomenal environment to not only learn a traditional martial art from able and knowledgeable instructors, but also to learn practical self-defense while getting into shape. "
