Carl Stokes learned at an early age the benefits of working for yourself. At the age of 12, growing up in the hard streets of New Jersey when most kids were out playing for summer break, Carl was faced with the unbelievable task of managing a family member’s deli due to an illness. From that point on, Carl realized he had the gift of self motivation and a natural sense for business.
Carl attended Upsala College, in East Orange New Jersey, but was faced with another obstacle. He was diagnosed with Dyslexia, a reading disability that makes learning more challenging. This meant he had to study longer and harder to maintain a passing GPA. Despite the many hurdles facing Carl, he still managed to play football and run track helping his alma mater, Upsala College, qualify for its first Penn Relays.
Graduating from Upsala College in 1986, with a BA in Marketing, Carl decided to follow his heart and try his hand at entrepreneurship. Starting his first company, Stokes Bread Distributors, with only $500 Carl was able to grow the business by buying baked goods below wholesale and selling the products to local deli’s and C-stores at a profit. After growing and managing the business for three years, he decided to undertake a bigger challenge. Carl sold the business for $45,000 and became one of the first distributors of Mistic Beverages, supplying companies like Woolworth’s, Pathmark, ShopRite, the Cities of Newark, New Jersey and Irvington, New Jersey, Rutgers and Seton Hall Universities as well as AT&T, UMDNJ.
By 1993 Carl was running a multi-million dollar beverage and bottled-water Company called Virgin Springs, in Newark, NJ and becoming one of the first African Americans to own a bottled-water company on the East Coast. In 1995 Carl negotiated a multi-million dollar bottled-water contract with the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Ga. After that highly charged multi-year business transaction Carl decided to sell his profitable bottled-water company to the Culligan Water Corporation. By this time, Carl was in great demand, as a consultant, because of his negotiation, customer-relation, business development, and presentation and leadership skills.
In 1999, Carl was contracted by Poland Spring Water as their Director of Sales for their largest distributor in North America with $75,000,000.00+ in revenue, servicing over 50,000 commercial and residential customers in the New York/New Jersey market. Under his management and marketing leadership the company sales grew by over 300% within a two year period.
In 2002, Carl was bit by the entrepreneurship bug once again and decided to branch out on his own with Blue Mountain Spring Water. Again, his leadership skills enabled the business to expand. The company was sold in 2005 to a New Jersey investment firm.
Today, Carl Stokes is a sought after Sales Trainer, Inspirational and Motivational Speaker in New Jersey. Some of his clients have been Prudential Properties, Coldwell Banker, BMW cars, REMAX Realty, Jan-Pro Cleaning, Century 21, Crossroads Realty, Suntory Water Group, and many more. Over the years, Carl Stokes has trained thousands of sales executives throughout the East Coast of the United States.
Carl Stokes is the founder and CEO of Coach37/Sales Enhancement Institute. Coach37 is a sales training, coaching and motivational speaking firm, based in New Jersey, with a focus on Positive Attitude and Mental Toughness.
Carl Stokes also sits on the board of several New Jersey based corporations, including Personal Data Security Systems, Federal SS, HPS and GENACS. He has also authored the soon to be published books entitled: “90/10 Rule of Selling”, "IRA for Setting Goals"
