Though the idea of artistically mounting photographs and other memorabilia is age-old, scrapbooking became an actual mainstream industry in the 1980s because of American scrapbooking expert Marielen Christensen. Christensen is often credited with turning scrapbooking into a popular hobby, thus prompting craft stores to sell more materials used to make scrapbooks and scrapbooking classes to become more mainstrewam. Soon, scrapbooking turned into a social outing where scrappers (as they’re called) meet up to share tips and ideas—much like having a scrapbooking class with friends!
