About Salsa
As many who's taken a salsa class knows, this popular dance tradition is celebrated for its sensual and "spicy" style. The Spanish word "salsa" implies this sentiment, pinpointing the dance's "sauciness" as its defining characteristic. Though salsa classes and salsa instructors now play strong roles in this country's dance community, their popularity is a relatively recent phenomenon.

Salsa's roots trace back to the development of "Cuban Sun," a mix of Spanish music and African rhythms that gained popularity in Cuba in the early 20th century. The spread of Cuban Sun followed the invent of radio broadcasting in 1922, which also cemented Cuba as a trendy new music haven for NYC-based musicians looking to escape Prohibition laws.

Thanks to this setup, "Rumba," or the "grandfather of Latin dances," spread to the U.S. around the same time, lending to the development of salsa's most basic steps, and thusly, the rise of salsa classes and salsa instructors.

A typical salsa class may cover a range of different styles, including those rooted in Latin American traditions, and those rooted in North American traditions. If you're looking to master a specific style, use Betterfly's search filters to find a salsa instructor specializing in your area of choice. There's a right salsa instructor for everyone!
