About Quilting
Did you know that the first quilts date back to the 1st century? We typically think of quilting as a hobby, but back then quilts were practical for warmth and protection.

In the Middle Ages, for example, men often wore quilted garments under their armor. Later they were more commonly used as bedspreads, and more recently, for aesthetic and artistic purposes. So it’s no surprise that quilting classes have been popular throughout generations! Although many techniques exist today, the ones more widely taught by quilting teachers are hand quilting and machine quilting. Classes focused on hand quilting will show you how to use a needle and thread to sew together the fabrics to be quilted.

A machine quilting class, on the other hand, involves stacking the fabrics as a “sandwich” and then using the machine to sew it all together. Regardless of what quilting class you choose to take, the first step isto choose a pattern and fabric. Your quilting teacher can point you to online resources or stores that offer quilt block patterns. While you’re there, you can pick out your batting, which is the material that goes in the middle of your quilt “sandwich”. There are different types of batting, so you might want to ask your quilting teacher for advice, depending on how “poufy” or thin you want your quilt to be.

Sounds like there are a lot of choices, right? That’s why it’s the perfect time to search Betterfly’s quilting classes and let quilting teacher show you the way!
