About Ping Pong/Table Tennis
Historically, table tennis was a parlor game played by upper-class British men in the late 19th century. It was originally called “wiff-waff” (and later “ping-pong”) because of the sound the ball makes when it’s hit back and forth. If you’re familiar with regular tennis, then picking up ping pong lessons can be a breeze!

The game is similar to tennis in that players win points when their opponent fails to return the ball over the net and onto their side of the table. Of course, the racket is a lot smaller! Some say the first table tennis coaches and players used cigar box tops and champagne corks. Today, ping pong lessons are most commonly taught using rackets made of a wooden frame with a sheet of rubber stretched across the top.

Some table tennis coaches may use rackets with a sponge layer between the wood and rubber, which effectively slows down the game and perhaps makes it easier to teach a beginner ping pong lesson. After you get the basics down, your table tennis coach can show you a variety of grips. The two main types are penhold, where you hold the racket similarly to how you’d hold a pen, and shakehand, where you grasp the racket as if shaking someone’s hand. A lot of other strategies have to do with physics and how you can hit the ball to produce different strokes and spins.

Whether you’re training with a table tennis coach for competitive sport, or just want to take a ping pong lesson for fun, Betterfly can help find the right instructor for you.
