About Pilates
German-born Joseph. H. Pilates developed this system of exercise at the outbreak of WWI, when he began teaching the first ever Pilates class to help rehabilitate injured war victims. When he immigrated to the United States in the late 1920s, he opened up a fitness studio in NYC and began teaching Pilates classes to famous dancers from the New York City Ballet.

After Joseph's death in 1967, many of his protégés become Pilates instructors themselves and opened up studios offering Pilates classes across the United States.

Once Pilates instructor Ron Fletcher opened a studio in Beverley Hills in the 1970s, Hollywood celebrities took to the exercise method, which caused a media frenzy that propelled many a Pilates instructor into the limelight.

As of 2005, there were over 14,000 registered Pilates instructors in the United States alone. And with over 11 million Americans now practicing the exercise, it would seem that there's a certain je ne sais quoi to the Pilates class that people simply can't resist.
