About Ballet
Although "ballet" is a French word, it actually originated in Italy during the 15th century Renaissance; later it would spread across Europe and all over the world. The first ballets were performed by men to the accompaniment of classical music. Posture, placement and alignment are the key elements of classic ballet. Teachers of ballet classes may adhere to these traditional ballet techniques, but today there are also several different types including neoclassical and contemporary ballet. Classes for neoclassical ballet are often less rigid and dances are choreographed to faster pace music.

The ballet teacher George Balanchine popularized this form in the U.S. with his work at the New York City Ballet, where he experimented in combining traditional elements with modern techniques. Many credit Balanchine as a major influence in contemporary ballet as well, which is often recognized by its use of pop music and floor work.

Ballet teachers typically hold their ballet classes in a dance studio with mirrored walls and a "barre", which is the French word for "bar". The bar is important for many different moves--in particular, for stretching before and after your ballet class. A ballet teacher may ask that you wear specific clothing like tights, leotard and most likely ballet shoes.

Whether you dream of performing on stage or just enjoy dancing, ballet class is an invigorating way to express your creativity through dance.
